And Brazil is set to host the World Cup during an impasse over riots ripping through the country. However, this time the World Cup will be staged at home. While playing abroad, the Brazilian football team embodied the stereotypical trilogy that has come to define the nation for the rest of the world: samba, soccer and sex. ![]() Through football and its stars, the state has crafted a global image of Brazil that – until recently – has distracted from the range of racial, economic, political and intersectional ills plaguing the South American giant. Its iconic lineage of soccer stars, starting with Pele and ending with Neymar, provide the state with single-named ambassadors known and loved all over the world. ![]() Brazil and football are synonymous: A conflation the state has engineered to carry forward its policies inside and outside of the country. This year’s tournament, furnishes the Brazilian government with a rare opportunity to showcase its greatest export on its home soil. Since donning the iconic, canary yellow and blue kit for the first time, Neymar has sidestepped defenders as if dancing the samba, and raced up and down the pitch with the cavalier and carnival spirit definitive of Brazilian football.Īs Neymar sprints into his prime, Brazil is primed to host its first World Cup in 64 years. Q: What is your biggest accomplishment in soccer?Ī: Winning back-to-back BIG EAST championships, but hopefully I can say winning a national championship soon.Only 22 years old, the footballer known simply as “Neymar” is far more than the “ face of Brazilian soccer“. Q: What will you try to pass on to next year’s seniors?Ī: Work hard and give it all you have you don’t want to leave here with any regrets. There are not too many people who can say they have done what I have. Q: What does it mean for you to play for Notre Dame?Ī: It means everything. Q: What activities do you enjoy besides soccer?Ī: I like to play basketball, and sleeping is on my list, too. Q: What is the biggest obstacle you have ever overcome?Ī: I broke my foot before my sophomore season and then had surgery again that spring, so it was a really hard time for me, but I kept my confidence and recovered well. Nothing is ever the same in any one game.Ī: I wouldn’t say a specific person, but I aspire to be the best I can be.Ī: I want to be designing for Nike or adidas and enjoying my family. It’s up to you to be creative and make things happen. Q: What is the best thing about playing soccer?Ī: It’s just a free game there is not too much restriction. Q: What will you miss most when you graduate?Ī: Everything, but if I had to pick, it’d be my team and friends. Q: Is there a class you wish you could just take for fun? Q: What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently?Ī: I haven’t had the chance to see any recently, but “Stepbrothers” was great. Q: What’s the best part about going home?Ī: Getting to see my family and relaxing. Q: What’s the best place to eat on campus?Ī: Industrial Design and Computer Applications This is our season now so we have to be accountable for what we do. Q: What is different about being a senior on the team?Ī: There is more responsibility you can’t just float along like a freshman. I can just hangout there and get some work done if I need to.Ī: I want to win a national championship and add to the reputation of Notre Dame soccer. Q: Where is your favorite place to go on campus?Ī: My favorite place to go is LaFortune. Samba has played in 38 career games for the Irish, totaling three goals, one assist and seven points. The Indianapolis, Ind., native has seen action in 15 games this season, scoring one goal and adding one assist. Senior forward Tamba Samba has been a constant contributor for the Irish for the past two seasons.
